Lung function tests (LFTs) are used to evaluate the performance of your lungs. They measure how well you can breathe in and out, how effectively your lungs transfer oxygen into your bloodstream, the volume of your lungs and airway resistance. These tests help in diagnosing and monitoringvarious lung conditions and are often repeated over time to track your progress.Lung function tests are also known as pulmonary function tests (PFTs) or respiratory function tests (RFTs).
You may need a lung function test if you're having trouble breathing, coughing frequently, or experiencing shortness of breath.Y our doctor may also recommend these tests if you:
Have an existing lung condition; to monitor its progress and how well it';s responding to treatment
Are exposed to substances at home or work that could affect your lungs
Notice symptoms that might suggest a lung issue
Are preparing for surgery
Have a suspected lung disease that needs further investigation
Lung function tests are generally safe for most people. However, they may cause dizziness or light-headedness. If you experience any of these symptoms, be sure to inform the scientist. A safety checklist will be completed before the test to confirm that you're fit for testing.
To prepare for your lung function test, please remember to:
Avoid smoking for at least one hour before the test (ideally 24 hours)
Do not consume caffeine on the day of the test
Refrain from vigorous exercise for up to 4 hours before the test
No recent surgery in the last 4 weeks
Wear loose, comfortable clothing
Avoid eating a large meal at least two hours before the test
If you wear dentures, make sure to wear them during the test to help you seal your lipstightly around the mouthpiece
If you use an inhaler, you may need to withhold for a certain time before the test
